We’ve been banging the AI drum for some time now to keep you in the loop with its ever-changing impact on brand visibility, our industry and beyond. But right now, we want to strip it back to the basics and answer everyone’s burning question: what on EARTH is AI Visibility, and why is it so important?

The way people discover and validate businesses has fundamentally changed. Today, your customers aren’t Googling you, or at least not in the traditional sense that leads straight to a click through to your website.

They’re likely getting their information straight from LLMs (Large Language Models) and AI platforms – or using Google’s new search features and taking a deep dive in AI mode – to pull together a wealth of sources that answer their specific questions in one neat little bow.

In a nutshell, AI Visibility is whether or not you show up in an LLM’s answer. If these powerful new platforms aren’t surfacing your brand, you’re simply not visible.

This might sound like SEO, PR, and discoverability heresy, but hear us out.

AI Visibility in context

At YS, we’ve been defining AI Visibility as the measure of how discoverable and recommendable your brand is to LLMs and AI-powered search engines. It’s the evolution of PR, switching broadsheets and glossy mags for AI fame.

We already know that traditional PR focuses on getting your message into the media. While that’s still vital, the new frontier is ensuring that the AI, which summarises and answers queries for your potential customers, actually knows who you are. And, crucially, recommends you.

AI doesn’t learn about your brand from a single press release or a handful of keywords on your website. It learns the same way a human learns: through validation. If you’re consistently cited, quoted, and positioned as an expert across a broad spectrum of trusted sources (think articles, podcasts, expert databases, and more), AI views you as credible.

On the flip side, if you’re not showing up in the sources the AI trusts, you’re essentially invisible to the next generation of search.

Why does it matter so much right now?

We’re at a pivotal point in digital history. Research shows that as much as 80% of customers now rely on AI-written results to guide their purchasing decisions.

If you’re only relying on traditional SEO or PR tactics passed down by Patsy and Edina (sorry, queens! We love you really), you’re running the risk of falling asleep at the wheel as the rest of us drive full speed ahead into the land of AI.

To avoid this, you have to wake up to these three lessons:

1. AI is the new gatekeeper. If an AI summarises a query and doesn’t mention your brand, that potential customer might never even know you exist. You may be the best in your field, but if you’re not cited, you’re silent.

2. It’s not just about being found. It’s about being trusted. AI Visibility focuses on quality, not quantity. It forces you to prioritise authentic citations from credible sources, ensuring your brand is not just found, but trusted.

3. Reputation is digital cement; AI doesn’t forget. The content AI consumes and recommends today builds an opinion of your brand for the future. Getting your AI Visibility right now ensures long-term reputation management.
