What is a GEO audit and when is the right time for one?

Search has changed. In the past, ‘search’ meant typing something into Google and picking from a list of links. Now, it means asking your question to AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini and getting one answer with only a handful of brands (and sometimes none).
That shift is happening fast and for many, it’s hard to adjust to. Here’s a full breakdown of what has changed, why it matters, and where a GEO audit comes into play.
How has search changed?
According to DemandSage, via SERPs.io, ChatGPT has become the first app to reach one billion active users within three years of its launch, with OpenAI reporting it received approximately 2.5 billion prompts a day. Similarly, Perplexity has gone from receiving around 780 million monthly queries in mid-2025 to over a billion by mid-2026, and Gemini’s web traffic managed to increase roughly 9X in eighteen months (SQ Magazine, citing Similarweb).
And whilst AI search rises, traditional Google search is dropping. Back in 2024, Gartner predicted that traditional forms of search would drop by 25% by 2026 due to the rise in AI, and their predictions are shaping out to be correct (Marketing Enigma, citing Gartner).
Put simply, people are no longer clicking through to find your brand. Instead, they are only seeing what AI chooses to say about you, if they choose to say anything at all.
What is a GEO audit?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation and is the practice of making sure AI models can find, understand, trust and accurately cite your brand when someone asks a relevant question.
A GEO audit is the diagnostic step to understand how your brand is performing in the world of AI visibility – and where you should focus your actions. It’s a structured review of how visible you are alongside a breakdown of what’s working, what’s not working and where the gaps are.
It’s important to note that GEO is not the same as SEO. Whilst they are related disciplines, a page that ranks well on Google is not guaranteed to perform well on AI search. Google ranks pages by relevance and authority, whereas AI chooses who to recommend based on how clearly and confidently it can extract an answer from your content as well as what other sources say about your brand.
Why is a GEO audit important?
AI is already choosing who gets recommended,
According to BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 45% of consumers now use AI tools to find local services, compared to just 6% in 2025. Yet SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index, which analysed over 350,000 business locations, found ChatGPT currently recommends just 1.2% of them.
This means that almost half of your potential new business are asking AI where to go, and if you are not part of the 1.2% being recommended, then you’re missing out.
Being left out has a real and immediate cost.
Brands that do get cited in AI answers see more traffic and better conversion rates than those that only rely on traditional search. With multiple data sources agreeing that AI -referred visitors convert significantly better than generic search traffic (Omnibound, citing Adobe Digital Insights; Sunny Patel, citing Seer Interactive).
This is not just a marketing experiment.
Two-thirds of Fortune 500 marketing leaders now rank showing up in AI search among their top three priorities according to MarketIntelo. This increase shows the shift in how important people perceive AI visibility to be, and whilst they are working to appear in that space, your brand is at risk of being left behind.
What does a GEO audit include?
- A baseline visibility check – running a set of prompts based on what people may search that you’d like your brand to be visible for across the major AI platforms, to see whether, how often, and how favourably your brand comes up.
- Citation and mention analysis – distinguishing between being mentioned by name and being cited as an actual source, and identifying which of your pages (if any) AI models are pulling from.
- Competitor benchmarking – the same prompts run against named competitors, so you can see who’s winning the answer and why.
- Technical crawlability – checking whether AI crawlers can actually access and read your site at all.
- Structured data and schema – looking at whether AI systems understand what a page is about and how easy it is to find an answer from it.
- Content structure and extractability – whether your content is written in a way a model can find a confident and concise answer from.
- Entity and authority signals – a detailed look at the trust and expertise markers that influence whether a model treats your content as a reliable source worth citing.
Why more people are turning to tools to help
Running a GEO audit and keeping track of how visible you are in AI isn’t a one-off exercise. The space is changing all the time, and the answers AI gives can shift with little warning. That means visibility isn’t something you need to check once. It’s something you need to keep on top of constantly.
Running this kind of audit by hand is demanding and time consuming, and that’s time that could be spent actually making changes. By the time you’ve finished running a manual audit across every platform and prompt, your visibility may have already shifted again, meaning you’re left working from data that’s already out of date.
This is why more people are turning to tools to help with their GEO audits. They run your audit continuously so you are always up to date and saves you time that could be spent making active improvements. Most organisations see meaningful movement in their AI visibility within one to three months of acting on audit findings (Blend Interactive).
Using a tool, such as Visbly, can also help you improve your score by highlighting PR opportunities, naming the exact publications AI is citing, pointing you toward specific, actionable fixes and more.

The bottom line
Search has already changed. The question isn’t whether AI platforms are influencing how your customers find and choose brands, the data above makes that clear, it’s whether you know how your brand shows up when they ask.
A GEO audit answers that question. It shows you exactly where you stand, how visible you are in AI answers, what is driving it, and what needs fixing. We can’t control the speed in which search is changing but not knowing how you’re showing up could be the one thing standing between your brand appearing in answers, and losing out completely.
